About Might & Magic
I first played Might & Magic on the NES in 1988, a time when sprawling fantasy games were still a novelty on the console. It was developed by New World Computing, and it felt ambitious for an 8-bit cartridge, offering a huge world to explore right from the start. You didn't just control a single hero; you managed a full party of six characters, each with their own class and stats, which was a complex step up from many other games of that era.
You guide your party across an overworld map and through towns and dungeons, moving screen by screen. The main goal is to uncover the mystery plaguing the land of Varn by talking to people, finding clues, and fighting monsters in turn-based combat. Key mechanics include first-person dungeon delving where you navigate dark corridors, managing your party's resources like spells and food, and constantly upgrading your equipment. The game is notoriously difficult, demanding careful planning and a lot of grinding to survive. It feels like a massive, challenging project that you slowly piece together through trial and error.
