About Micro Machines
Micro Machines on the Game Boy came out in 1991 from Codemasters. It was a time when getting a convincing racing game on the small screen was a real challenge, and this one managed to fit the chaotic fun of the console versions into your pocket. The game didn't try to be a serious simulator; it was about racing tiny cars on tables, garden patios, and other everyday surfaces turned into tracks.
You control one of these miniature vehicles, aiming to win each race by being the first to cross the finish line. The core mechanics are straightforward but demanding. You must stay on the track surface; if you veer off into the "out of bounds" area for too long, you are eliminated instantly. The screen scrolls automatically, and if you fall too far behind, you simply disappear from the race. This creates a constant pressure to maintain speed and perfect your lines around breakfast cereal obstacles and pencil curves. The controls are responsive but twitchy, requiring precise adjustments to avoid spinning out on a slick kitchen tabletop. It feels like a tense, high-stakes dash where a single mistake can end your run.
