Meitantei Holmes - Kiri No London Satsujin Jiken (japan) Game
📅 1986 ✍️ Tose

This one's a weird little NES gem—Sherlock Holmes in a murder mystery set in foggy London, but made by a Japanese dev. You'd expect point-and-click, but it's actually a side-scroller where Holmes walks around interrogating suspects, picking up clues, and occasionally getting into fistfights (yes, really). The pixel art's surprisingly moody for an NES game, all gas lamps and rain-slicked streets.
First time I played, I got stuck because I didn't realize you could examine objects by pressing down—classic NES-era "figure it out yourself" design. The English fan translation helps, though some dialogue still feels like it went through three layers of 80s localization. If you dig obscure detective games with janky charm, it's got this odd appeal—like finding a mystery novel stuffed inside an old arcade cabinet.
