About Medarot Kuwagata
Medarot Kuwagata came out for the Game Boy in 1997, published by Natsume. It was part of that wave of late 90s portable games where you could really get lost in a world built from small, detailed sprites. You play as a kid who gets a transforming robot, a Medarot, and the story kicks off from there.
You control your character from an overhead view, walking through towns and fields screen by screen. Your main goal is to fight other Medarots in turn based battles to collect their parts. The combat uses a unique system where you select actions for your robot's right arm, left arm, and legs each turn. Winning these fights lets you swap out components, customizing your Medarot's abilities and appearance. The game has a steady pace, though some of the later rival battles can be quite tough. It feels like building a powerful machine piece by piece through your own decisions.
