Monster Max is this weird little isometric puzzle game from Rare—yeah, that Rare—back when they were still making oddball Game Boy experiments. You play as this kid who turns into a monster (because of course) and has to navigate these block-pushing, switch-flipping puzzles in a sort of tilted 3D view. It’s way more brain-teaser than action, though the controls take a second to click since everything’s at that awkward diagonal angle.

First few screens trick you into thinking it’s simple, then suddenly you’re backtracking to find keys, timing jumps over pits, and realizing some blocks can’t be moved at all. The monster gimmick mostly just lets you smash certain walls, but the real star is the level design—Rare knew how to make a puzzle feel impossible until that one "aha" moment. Definitely one of the more overlooked gems in the Game Boy library.
