About Maui Mallard
I first played Maui Mallard on the Game Boy in 1996, a time when Disney Interactive was putting out a lot of licensed platformers. It was a solid entry in that crowded field, a game you'd find tucked between other cartridges in a plastic case. The premise was simple enough: you control Donald Duck, but he's a detective named Cold Shadow on a tropical island.
You guide Donald through side scrolling levels, jumping between platforms and defeating enemies with a quick boomerang throw. The main goal is to explore each stage, screen by screen, to uncover a stolen idol. One of the more interesting mechanics lets Donald transform into his ninja alter ego, which changes his movement and attack style. The pacing is brisk, and some of the later platforming sequences require precise timing, making it a decent challenge for a handheld game. It feels responsive and quick in your hands, a satisfying little adventure to complete.
