About Maru's Mission
I first played Maru's Mission on my Game Boy in 1990. It was published by Jaleco, and it fit right in with the other action-adventure titles of that early handheld era. The screen was small, the colors were shades of gray, and you had to rely on good level design to hold your interest. This game understood that.
You control a small, agile character named Maru. Your goal is to navigate through a series of multi-screen rooms, clearing each one of enemies before you can proceed. The main mechanic is exploration; you move screen by screen, and each new area locks you in until you defeat every foe. You have a sword for close combat and a limited supply of bombs for tougher enemies or breaking certain walls. The pacing is deliberate, almost puzzle-like, as you figure out the enemy patterns in each confined space. It feels methodical and tense, a quiet test of patience and precision on a small screen.
