I first played Maru's Mission on my Game Boy in 1990. It was published by Jaleco, and it fit right in with the other action-adventure titles of that early handheld era. You control a small, agile character named Maru. Your goal is to navigate through a series of multi-screen rooms, clearing each one of enemies before you can proceed. The main mechanic is exploration; you move screen by screen, and each new area locks you in until you defeat every foe. You have a sword for close combat and a limited supply of bombs for tougher enemies or breaking certain walls. The pacing is deliberate, almost puzzle-like, as you figure out the enemy patterns in each confined space. It feels methodical and tense, a quiet test of patience and precision on a small screen.
