Maniac Mansion came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, developed by Lucasfilm Games. It was a point and click adventure ported to a console that usually featured more action oriented titles, which made it stand out at the time.

You control a teenager who must rescue his girlfriend from a mad scientist's house. You pick two friends from a roster of six to accompany you, each with unique skills that unlock different solutions. The game plays out screen by screen as you explore the mansion, clicking on objects to examine or use them, and combining items in your inventory to solve puzzles. The main objective is to find a way into the basement to confront the scientist, but the path is nonlinear and filled with strange characters and environmental hazards. Progress is slow and deliberate, as a wrong move can lead to an immediate, often silly, game over. Playing it feels like piecing together a bizarre logic puzzle where the rules are never quite what you expect.
