Makaimura Gaiden: The Demon Darkness came out for the Game Boy in 1993, developed by Capcom. It was part of that wave of portable games trying to capture the feel of bigger console adventures, but built for short sessions on the move. You control a knight named Arthur, though this isn't the straightforward run and slash of the main Ghosts 'n Goblins series. Instead, it shifts the perspective and the rules.

You guide Arthur through a series of discrete, single-screen rooms, each one a self-contained puzzle or combat encounter. Your main goal is to explore these interconnected areas, defeat the monsters within, and ultimately conquer the demonic forces. You have a sword for close attacks and a bow for hitting distant enemies, switching between them as the situation demands. The game is methodical; you check each screen carefully, often backtracking to use newly found keys or items. It is quite difficult, with limited health and enemies that respawn when you re-enter a room. Progress feels earned through cautious exploration and precise weapon use.
