Makaimura Gaiden: The Demon Darkness is one of those Game Boy gems that feels like a proper dungeon crawl—if dungeons were filled with pixel demons and you had to stab your way through them. You start off with this little sword-swinging hero (who moves way slower than you’d expect), and within minutes, you’re dodging bats, skeletons, and whatever else the game throws at you in tight corridors.

It’s got that classic Makaimura vibe—dark, a little janky, and punishing in the best way. The levels are short but brutal, and the monsters respawn if you backtrack, which is either annoying or genius, depending on how much you like pain. The music’s got that eerie chiptune sound that sticks in your head, too.

If you’re into old-school action games where every hit matters and the controls take some getting used to, this one’s a solid pick. Just don’t expect to beat it in one sitting unless you’ve got nerves of steel.
