Mahjong Taisen is one of those old-school NES mahjong games that feels like digging up a time capsule. It's got that classic tile-matching gameplay, but with a few quirks—like the way the AI opponents take forever to make their moves, or how the kanji-heavy interface makes you squint at first. Not gonna lie, it's a bit rough around the edges compared to modern mahjong games, but there's something charming about its simplicity.

You start off picking from a few basic modes, and before long you're sliding tiles around, trying to make sense of the scoring system (good luck with that). The music’s this weirdly catchy synth loop that either gets stuck in your head or drives you nuts—no in-between. If you're into retro mahjong or just curious about weird NES deep cuts, this one’s a neat little artifact. Just don’t expect it to hold your hand.
