Ever played an action RPG where you time-travel between ancient Arabia and a futuristic version of it? That’s The Magic of Scheherazade for you—a weird, ambitious little NES game from 1989 that most people missed. You start off as a swordsman in classic desert ruins, but then suddenly warp to a sci-fi city with laser guns. Yeah, it’s as bizarre as it sounds.
Combat’s a mix of Zelda-style slashing and turn-based party battles—which somehow works? You recruit allies like a genie and a robot (because why not), and the whole thing has this dreamlike, slightly janky charm. The music’s oddly catchy too, especially that overworld theme. It’s definitely rough around the edges, but there’s nothing else quite like it on the NES.
