Magic John was released only in Japan for the Nintendo Entertainment System. I don't recall the developer, but it's one of those many action games that came out during the NES era, trying to find its place alongside more famous titles. It has a simple, almost crude look that feels very much of its time.

You control a character, John, who moves screen by screen through a sidescrolling world. Your main goal is to rescue a princess, which involves navigating platforms and fighting off various enemies. You use a basic attack, like a short-range punch or a weapon, to defeat foes. A key mechanic is collecting items; you find keys to unlock doors and other power-ups that help you progress. The game moves at a steady pace, but the level design can be unforgiving, with tricky jumps and enemy placements that make it quite difficult. Playing it feels like a straightforward, sometimes frustrating, test of your timing and patience.
