I first played M.C. Kids on the Nintendo Entertainment System back in 1992. It was published by Virgin Interactive, and it stood out from other platformers of the era because of its connection to McDonald's. Instead of a typical hero, you control one of two kids on a quest to retrieve Ronald McDonald's magic bag, which has been stolen by the Hamburglar. The game's world is built around familiar McDonald's landmarks, which gave it a distinct, almost surreal quality compared to the fantasy and sci-fi titles that were common then.

You guide your character through side-scrolling levels, jumping on platforms and avoiding enemies like walking hamburgers and angry fries. Your main goal is to collect puzzle cards scattered throughout each stage; finding all of them is often required to unlock the exit. A key mechanic involves finding and using special blocks that you can pull out of the scenery and carry around. You can use these blocks as stepping stones to reach higher areas or as projectiles to stun enemies. The game also features warp zones hidden behind certain walls, allowing you to skip ahead or find secret areas. The pacing is methodical, as you frequently stop to figure out where to place a block or which path leads to a missing card, and the difficulty can spike in later worlds with more complex platforming. It feels like a clever, if sometimes unforgiving, puzzle box disguised as a kid-friendly jumper.
