About Lee Trevino's Fighting Golf
Lee Trevino's Fighting Golf came out for the NES in 1988, developed and published by SNK. It was part of that wave of early sports games trying to capture a real world activity with simple graphics and straightforward rules. You did not get many golf options on the console back then, so this one stood out simply by existing.
You control a golfer, either Lee Trevino himself or a generic opponent, with the main goal of getting the ball in the hole in as few strokes as possible. The game uses a three click system for your swing: you press the button to start the power meter, again to set the power, and a final time to determine the accuracy of the shot. You have to account for wind direction and strength on every shot, which adds a constant variable to your planning. The game moves at a deliberate pace, and the challenge comes from judging distances and controlling the finicky swing meter under pressure. It feels like a patient, sometimes frustrating test of your timing and estimation.
