About Labyrinth (japan)
Labyrinth came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, developed and published in Japan by Tokuma Shoten. It was one of many games from that period trying to capture the feel of a movie, in this case the Jim Henson film, on the 8-bit hardware. You see a lot of that from the late 80s, where companies were quickly turning popular films into side-scrolling adventures.
You control a young boy named Jareth, who must navigate a large, interconnected castle to rescue a girl named Sarah. The game plays out screen by screen; you move through rooms and outdoor areas, jumping across platforms and fighting off creatures with a simple attack. Your main goal is to find a certain number of magic crystals hidden throughout the castle, which often involves solving minor environmental puzzles or defeating specific enemies. The pacing is deliberate, almost slow, and the difficulty can be unforgiving due to limited continues and some tricky jumps. It feels like a methodical, sometimes frustrating trek through a maze where every new screen could mean a dead end or a sudden enemy ambush.
