LEGO Racers came out for the Nintendo 64 in 1999, developed by High Voltage Software. It was part of that wave of late 90s games that tried to translate physical toys into a digital space, and it landed right when the N64 was full of kart racing competitors. You weren't just getting a racing game; you were getting a LEGO game, which meant everything was built from those familiar plastic bricks.

You control a custom minifigure racer you build yourself at the start. The main goal is to win a series of cups across different themed worlds, like a pirate cove or a spooky castle track. Your signature mechanics are building your own car brick by brick from a selection of parts and collecting LEGO power-up bricks scattered on the track. These bricks let you assemble special weapons mid-race, like a homing missile or a shield, which you then activate to gain an edge. The pacing is generally quick, though the later cups can get surprisingly difficult with aggressive AI opponents. It feels like a chaotic, colorful scramble where a single well-timed power-up can completely turn a race around.
