I first played Kirby's Dream Land on the Game Boy in 1992, a time when the handheld was full of simple, portable adventures. It was developed by HAL Laboratory, and it introduced this round pink character to a lot of us. You control Kirby, a little puffball who can walk, jump, and float by swallowing air. Your goal is to travel through five levels, screen by screen, to defeat King Dedede, who stole all the food in Dream Land. Kirby's main trick is inhaling enemies; you can swallow them for a quick defeat or spit them back out as a star projectile. You also collect power-ups like the Mint Leaf for a temporary screen-clearing attack. The game is quite short and not very difficult, which makes it easy to finish in one sitting. It feels light and cheerful to play, a gentle introduction to the character.
