Kira to Kaiketsu! 64 Tanteidan is one of those weird, charming N64 detective games that never left Japan—which is a shame, because it’s got this quirky vibe that makes it stand out. You play as a kid detective solving cases, and the whole thing feels like a Saturday morning cartoon mixed with point-and-click adventure logic. The puzzles can get pretty out there (expect some moon logic at times), but the characters and dialogue have this goofy energy that keeps it fun even when you’re stuck.
First 10 minutes? You’re thrown into a case about a stolen artifact, and the game wastes no time making you poke around rooms, interrogate suspects, and piece together clues. The controls take a second to get used to—typical N64 jank—but once it clicks, it’s weirdly satisfying to flip through your notebook and connect the dots. If you’ve ever wanted a detective game where the solution might involve a rubber chicken or a suspiciously talkative parrot, this is your jam.
It’s not perfect, but it’s got way more personality than most mystery games from that era.
