Kingdom Crusade came out for the Game Boy in 1990, a time when handheld adventures were often ambitious but limited by the hardware. I don't recall the developer offhand, but it was one of those fantasy quests that tried to pack a big world into a small cartridge. It fit right in with other action games of the era, where you explored large maps one screen at a time, fighting monsters and searching for keys.

You control a knight on a mission to reclaim a kingdom. Your main goal is to explore a sprawling overworld and a series of dungeons, defeating enemies and gathering the scattered pieces of a royal crest. The game uses a screen by screen movement system; each new screen presents a fresh challenge or a hidden path. Combat is straightforward, relying on your sword, but you also find a bow for hitting distant targets. The pacing is deliberate, as you slowly map out the world and solve environmental puzzles to progress. It can be quite difficult, with enemies respawning when you leave and re-enter a screen, demanding careful resource management. Playing it feels like a methodical, sometimes tense, trek through a dangerous and interconnected land.
