The menus are all in Japanese, but after a few races you start recognizing which numbers mean "this horse is about to collapse."

There’s something weirdly satisfying about tweaking training routines between races—push too hard and your horse burns out by the final stretch. I lost my first five races before realizing slow starters actually have a shot if you pace them right. The pixelated crowd even does a little cheer when your horse wins, which feels oddly rewarding for a game from 1988.
