About Kame No Ongaeshi - Urashima Densetsu (japan)
Kame no Ongaeshi - Urashima Densetsu came out in 1986 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by Square. It was part of that early wave of NES games, a time when developers were still figuring out what an action-adventure game could be on the console. You don't see many people talk about it now, but it has a quiet presence from that era.
You control a young boy named Taro, and your main goal is to rescue Princess Otohime, who has been kidnapped. The game plays out screen by screen; you walk through forests, caves, and towns, fighting off monsters with a short sword. You also collect special items, like a bow for shooting distant enemies or a hookshot for crossing gaps. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty can be unforgiving if you rush into areas unprepared. Playing it feels like slowly uncovering a forgotten folktale, one screen at a time.
