About Juju Densetsu (japan)
JuJu Densetsu is a Japan only release for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by TOSE and published by Sunsoft in 1990. It arrived late in the NES lifecycle, a time when developers were pushing the hardware with more complex action adventures. The game presents a colorful, cartoonish world that feels distinct from many of its contemporaries.
You control a young boy, often accompanied by a monkey sidekick, navigating a mix of side scrolling platforming and top down exploration. Your main goal is to rescue your kidnapped father from an evil sorcerer. Signature mechanics include switching between the boy and the monkey on the fly, each with unique abilities; the boy uses a short range slap attack, while the monkey can climb certain walls and ceilings. You explore screen by screen, collecting magical items and power ups to unlock new areas, much like in a Metroidvania. The pacing is deliberate, with some backtracking required, and the difficulty can be unforgiving with limited continues. Playing it feels like slowly piecing together a large, interconnected map where every new item opens up previously unreachable paths.
