About Jongbou (japan)
Jongbou is a Japan only Nintendo Entertainment System release from 1990, developed by SNK and Micronics. It arrived during a period when the NES library was diversifying, offering players alternatives to the more common platformers and action games. This title combines two distinct genres into a single, unusual package.
You control a paddle at the bottom of the screen, deflecting a ball to break blocks arranged in the classic Arkanoid style. The twist comes from the blocks themselves; they are Mahjong tiles, and you must match pairs to clear them, often while the ball is still in play. Your main objective is to clear each stage by breaking all the blocks, navigating the dual demands of brick breaking and tile matching. The game's pacing is methodical, as you must carefully aim the ball to create openings for your tile matches. The difficulty comes from managing both tasks simultaneously, which requires a different kind of focus than a pure action game. It feels like a quiet, thoughtful puzzle that occasionally demands quick reflexes.
