About John Romero's Daikatana
I remember picking up John Romero's Daikatana for the Nintendo 64 back in 2000. It was developed by Ion Storm, a name that carried a lot of weight at the time. On the N64, a console known for its classic platformers and shooters, this game stood out as an ambitious first-person action RPG. It arrived late in the system's life, trying to carve its own space among more established titles.
You control Hiro Miyamoto, a swordsman from 25th century Japan who travels through different time periods to stop a tyrant. Your main goal is to recover the pieces of the powerful Daikatana sword. The gameplay mixes first-person combat with a sword and various projectile weapons, and you are accompanied by two computer-controlled sidekicks whose survival is often critical. You explore levels screen by screen, fighting enemies and solving environmental puzzles. The pacing can be slow and deliberate, with a difficulty that demands careful resource management. Playing it feels like a methodical, sometimes unforgiving trek through history.
