About Joe & Mac
Joe & Mac came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991, published by Data East. It was part of that era when side scrolling action games were common, and this one stood out with its prehistoric theme. You control one of two cavemen, Joe or Mac, on a quest to rescue the women of their tribe who have been kidnapped by a rival group of Neanderthals.
You move through levels screen by screen, using a club or a variety of projectile weapons like bones and boomerangs to defeat dinosaurs and other enemies. The main objective is to fight your way across twelve stages, each culminating in a boss battle. Key mechanics include finding and upgrading your weapons and the ability for a second player to join in simultaneously. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty can be steep, especially with the platforming challenges and aggressive foes. It feels like a chaotic, cooperative scramble through a cartoon version of the stone age.
