About Jantaku Boy (japan)
Jantaku Boy is a Japan only Game Boy release from 1990, developed by I'Max and published by Yojigen. It arrived early in the system's life, a time when developers were still figuring out how to build substantial adventures for the small screen. The game presents a top down world where you guide a young boy through a series of interconnected mazes.
You control the boy directly, moving him screen by screen through these maze like areas. Your main goal is to find and collect a set of hidden keys to unlock the exit door on each floor. The core mechanics involve pushing blocks to clear paths or trigger switches, and you must also avoid or outmaneuver patrolling enemies since you have no direct way to fight them. The game demands careful planning, as a single wrong push can block your only route forward, forcing a reset of the entire floor. Progress feels deliberate and sometimes tense, especially when you are one move away from solving a puzzle only to be cornered by an enemy. Navigating its spatial challenges provides a quiet, methodical satisfaction.
