About Jack Nicklaus' Major Championship Golf
Jack Nicklaus' Major Championship Golf came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, developed by Sculptured Software. It was one of the more serious golf simulations on the NES, arriving at a time when sports games were starting to offer more complex mechanics than simple arcade action.
You control a golfer through a full 18 holes, each one a famous real life course like Pebble Beach and St. Andrews. The main objective is to complete the course with the lowest score, navigating fairways, hazards, and greens. The game's signature mechanics include a three click swing meter for power and accuracy, a top down map view for planning your shots, and a separate putting interface on the green where reading the slope is crucial. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty is significant, especially when judging wind and distance. It feels like a thoughtful, sometimes punishing, round of golf where every decision matters.
