About J.league Big Wave Soccer (japan)
J.League Big Wave Soccer came out for the Game Boy in 1994, a time when handheld sports games were still finding their footing. It was published by Namco, and it tried to capture the excitement of Japan's professional soccer league on the small screen. This was not a flashy, arcade style experience but a more deliberate attempt at a portable soccer simulation.
You control a team of soccer players from a top down perspective, moving your selected player with the D pad and passing or shooting with the buttons. The main objective is to outscore your opponent within the match time limit. A couple of mechanics stand out: the ability to perform sliding tackles to dispossess opponents and the use of a special shot, which requires building up momentum for a more powerful strike. The game moves at a slower, more strategic pace compared to some of its contemporaries, and scoring a goal often feels like a hard earned reward. It feels like a thoughtful, almost methodical take on soccer where positioning and timing matter more than frantic button mashing.
