About Iron League
Iron League was released for the Game Boy in 1991 by Hudson Soft. It arrived during a period when the handheld was full of arcade style sports and action games, and this one fit right into that energetic mix. You take control of a futuristic athlete competing in a brutal, mechanized sporting event.
You guide your character through side scrolling combat arenas, fighting against other robotic competitors. The main goal is to defeat all opponents in each match to advance through the tournament brackets. Signature mechanics include picking up and using different weapons that appear on the field, from laser whips to projectile guns, and executing special attacks that consume a portion of your energy meter. The pacing is fast, with matches that demand quick reflexes and constant movement to avoid enemy attacks. It feels like a demanding test of your timing and aggression in a compact, pixelated ring.
