Ippatsu Gyakuten! DX Bakenou is one of those weird little Game Boy gems that never left Japan—which is a shame, because it’s basically a chaotic mix of mahjong and supernatural courtroom drama. You play as a lawyer (who also happens to be a fox spirit, because why not?) defending clients by... playing mahjong against the prosecution. Yeah, it’s as bizarre as it sounds.

The first case throws you right into it—some poor guy’s accused of theft, and the only way to prove his innocence is by out-mahjong-ing a smug prosecutor. The sprites are surprisingly expressive for a Game Boy game, and the music’s got this weirdly intense courtroom vibe with shamisen riffs. Took me a few rounds to realize you can actually cheat by using special "spirit tiles" to turn the game around last second. Feels like Phoenix Wright if he had a gambling problem.

Definitely not for everyone, but if you’re into offbeat Japan-only stuff, this one’s a trip. Just don’t expect the mahjong rules to hold your hand.
