About International Track & Field 2000
International Track & Field 2000 came out for the Nintendo 64 in 1999, published by Konami. It was part of that wave of late 90s sports games trying to capture the energy of the arcade on a home console. On the N64, which had plenty of platformers and racers, this was one of the few dedicated athletics titles you could play with friends on the same couch.
You control an athlete competing in a series of Olympic style events like the 100 meter dash, javelin throw, and long jump. The main objective is to win gold medals across these disciplines, either alone or against other players. Signature mechanics include the frantic button mashing to build up your runner's speed and the precise timing needed to release a javelin or initiate a pole vault. The pacing is fast and demanding; a single mistimed button press can ruin a perfect attempt. Playing it feels like a constant, physical test of your reflexes and coordination against the clock and your opponents.
