About International Superstar Soccer '98
International Superstar Soccer '98 came out for the Nintendo 64 in 1998, a Konami release that landed right in the middle of the console's life. It was a time when 3D sports games were still figuring themselves out, and this one stood out for its focus on the pitch. You had a few other football titles to choose from, but ISS '98 carved its own space with a particular feel for the game.
You control a full team of eleven players, switching between them to pass, tackle, and shoot. The main goal is simple: score more goals than the other side. A couple of its signature mechanics were the through pass, which let you slot the ball into open space for a runner, and the manual shooting, where you had to carefully aim your power and placement. The game moved at a brisk pace, faster than some sims, and the difficulty could spike sharply against the computer. It feels responsive and direct, like you are genuinely guiding the flow of play rather than just watching it happen.
