About International Superstar Soccer '98 (eu)
International Superstar Soccer '98 came out for the Nintendo 64 in 1998, developed and published by Konami. It was one of the more polished football games on the console at a time when the genre was really starting to find its footing in 3D. You could tell they were pushing the hardware to get a smooth experience.
You control a full team of eleven players, switching between them to pass, tackle, and shoot. The main goal is to outscore your opponent, of course. A couple of things that stood out were the through-pass system, which let you lead a runner into space with a well-timed button press, and the ability to perform a diving header for those desperate crosses into the box. The game moved at a brisk pace, and the difficulty felt fair; the computer would punish sloppy defending but wasn't cheap. It felt responsive and fluid, like you had genuine control over the flow of the match.
