Insector X came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1989, developed by Hot-B. It was part of that wave of late 80s shooters on the NES, games that tried to push the hardware with colorful, busy screens. You don't hear about it as much as some of the bigger names, but it had its own look and a particular kind of challenge.

You pilot a small, armed helicopter through six stages of insect infested territory. Your main goal is straightforward: shoot everything in your path and defeat the large boss creature waiting at the end of each level. The signature mechanic is your weapon system; you collect power ups that change your shot type, like a spread pattern or laser, and these upgrades are lost if you get hit. Another key feature is the ability to rotate your helicopter a full 360 degrees, letting you fire in any direction to cover your flanks and above. The pacing is relentless, with enemies swarming from all sides, and the difficulty ramps up quickly, demanding sharp reflexes and smart positioning. It feels like a constant, frantic battle for survival against an overwhelming bug army.
