About Initial D Gaiden (japan)
Initial D Gaiden is a Japan only Game Boy release from around the year 2000, developed by MTO. It arrived late in the handheld's life, a time when developers were still finding new ways to work within the system's simple hardware. This game is a car combat title based on the popular street racing manga and anime.
You control a driver from the series, navigating a top down map of a region to find rival racers. The main objective is to challenge and defeat these rivals in one on one races to clear your territory. Signature mechanics include using a limited turbo boost for sudden speed bursts and ramming opponents to damage their vehicles. The races are fast and the other drivers are aggressive, making for a challenging experience. It feels like a condensed, portable version of the franchise's high speed duels.
