About Infogenius Systems : Berlitz Fre
I picked up InfoGenius Systems: Berlitz Fre for the Game Boy back when it came out in 1990. It was one of those educational titles from The Software Toolworks, a company that put out a lot of learning software for computers and consoles. This one fit right in with the era's push for portable, cartridge based learning, sitting alongside other knowledge games on the platform.
You don't control a character so much as you navigate through a series of menus and multiple choice questions. The main objective is to test and improve your French vocabulary and grammar through various drills. The game presents phrases in English, and you have to select the correct French translation from a list. Another mode has you filling in missing words in sentences, and there are also basic pronunciation guides using phonetic spellings. The pacing is methodical; you work through categories like food, travel, and common verbs, with the difficulty slowly ramping up as your vocabulary expands. It feels like a structured, quiet study session you can hold in your hands.
