About Ikki (japan)
Ikki came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985, a release from Sunsoft. It was one of many games from that period trying to find its place on the new console, a side-scrolling action title with a specific historical setting.
You control a peasant farmer, Takurou, navigating screen by screen through villages and countryside. Your main goal is to rally other peasants to fight against oppressive tax collectors and samurai. You can use a bow for ranged attacks or a sword for close combat, and you collect coins dropped by defeated enemies to upgrade your equipment. The game moves at a deliberate pace, often throwing large numbers of foes at you, which makes the difficulty quite steep. It feels like a constant, scrappy struggle against overwhelming odds.
