I first played Ikari Warriors on the NES back in 1988. It was a port of an arcade game by SNK, and it fit right in with the other military themed shooters of that era on the console. You control one of two soldiers, Ralf or Clark, who are trying to rescue a captured ally deep in enemy territory.

You guide your commando from the bottom of the screen upward, shooting at a constant stream of enemy soldiers, bunkers, and vehicles. The main goal is to survive the journey and reach the POW camp. Key mechanics include collecting weapon power ups, like a flamethrower or a spread gun, to increase your firepower, and the ability to hop into abandoned tanks and helicopters you find along the way. The pacing is relentless, and the game is notoriously difficult due to the sheer number of enemies and limited continues. Playing it feels like a tense, uphill battle where every inch of progress is hard won.
