About Igo Shinan '93 (japan)
Igo Shinan '93 came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1993, a late release for the aging console. It was developed by Bullet Proof Software, a company known for its go and shogi titles. This was a time when many developers had moved on to 16-bit systems, so finding a new, dedicated go game on the NES felt like a specific treat for board game enthusiasts.
You play as a student of the game, navigating through a series of lessons and problem sets. Your main objective is to improve your go skills by solving tsumego, or life and death problems, on a grid-based board. The game progresses screen by screen, presenting you with increasingly difficult puzzles that test your reading ability. You place black and white stones to find the correct sequence, with the game judging your moves. The pacing is methodical, and the difficulty can be steep for newcomers. It feels like having a patient, if strict, tutor guiding you through the complexities of the board.
