About Igo - Kyuu Roban Taikyoku (japan)
Igo: Kyuu Roban Taikyoku came out in 1987 for the Nintendo Entertainment System in Japan, developed and published by Bullet-Proof Software. It was a time when the NES library was expanding with all sorts of genres, and this title offered a dedicated digital version of the classic board game Go. It was a release for a specific audience, arriving without the fanfare of more action-oriented games.
You play as one of two opponents, placing black or white stones on a grid with the goal of controlling more territory than your rival. The game faithfully recreates the core mechanics of Go, including capturing stones by completely surrounding them and the strategic placement that defines the scoring. You can play against the computer AI, which offers a range of difficulties, or against another person. The pacing is thoughtful and deliberate, demanding careful planning several moves ahead. It feels like a quiet, focused battle of wits played out on a small screen.
