Hyper Olympic on the NES is that old-school button-masher where you basically destroy your controller trying to sprint, jump, or hurl things faster than the other guy. The arcade version had the classics—100-meter dash, hurdles, javelin—but the NES port trimmed it down a bit. Still, the hammer throw feels just as ridiculous as ever, timing your spins just right before yeeting that thing into the stratosphere.

What’s funny is how deceptively simple it looks until you realize your thumbs are about to fall off from mashing A and B in perfect rhythm. The long jump’s all about nailing the takeoff, and if you mistime it? Enjoy faceplanting into the sand. It’s chaotic, a little janky, and honestly kind of brutal—but that’s half the charm. Just don’t expect deep strategy beyond “press buttons like your life depends on it.”

If you’ve got a competitive friend nearby, it’s a solid way to waste an afternoon arguing over who cheated during the high jump. The controls take some getting used to, but once it clicks, it’s weirdly satisfying to shave milliseconds off your time.
