Hyper Lode Runner on Game Boy is one of those games that looks simple until you actually try it. You start in these tight little maze levels where you dig holes to trap enemies—but they don’t stay trapped for long, so you’ve gotta move fast. The first few stages ease you in, but by level 5, you’re already second-guessing every move.
The pixel art’s surprisingly crisp for a Game Boy title, and the controls are snappy—though misjudging a jump means watching your little guy tumble into the abyss. There’s something weirdly satisfying about luring enemies into pits and then scrambling past them. Just don’t get cocky; those treasure pickups are bait half the time.
If you played the original Lode Runner, this feels like a polished-up love letter. If you didn’t, well… expect a lot of frantic digging and occasional swearing. Either way, it’s a great way to kill time on a bus ride.
