About Hyper Lode Runner
Hyper Lode Runner came out for the Game Boy in 1990, published by Bandai. It was one of those puzzle platformers that felt right at home on the handheld, a game you could pick up for a few minutes or get stuck on for much longer. In an era full of action and adventure titles, this one asked you to think more than you jumped.
You control a small character who must collect all the gold pieces scattered across each single screen stage. The main objective is straightforward: grab everything and reach the exit. Your primary tool is the ability to dig holes directly to your left and right, which you use to trap the enemy robots chasing you. They fall into these pits, giving you a brief window to either collect gold or maneuver past them before they climb out. The levels are tightly designed, requiring you to plan your route and often rebuild parts of the stage by strategically removing blocks. The pacing is methodical, and the difficulty ramps up significantly as you progress, introducing more enemies and complex layouts. It feels like a tense, strategic race against the clock where a single misstep can undo your entire plan.
