About Hugo
I first played Hugo on my Game Boy around 1990, a release from ITE Media. It was one of those many platformers that filled the library back then, not particularly famous but a solid part of the handheld landscape. You controlled a little character, Hugo, through a series of side scrolling levels. The goal was straightforward: navigate from the start to the exit, avoiding enemies and pitfalls.
You moved Hugo left and right, jumped across gaps, and sometimes climbed ladders. The main objective was simply to survive each stage and reach the end. Signature mechanics included collecting items, perhaps keys or other power ups, to progress and dealing with environmental hazards like spikes or falling platforms. The pacing was methodical; you had to plan your jumps carefully because the controls felt a bit stiff and mistakes were costly. It was a challenging game that demanded patience. Playing it felt like a careful, sometimes tense, test of your timing and persistence.
