Holy Magic Century (F) is one of those N64 games that flew under the radar but absolutely nails that old-school fantasy vibe. You start off as this apprentice mage, and right away, the game throws you into its weirdly satisfying magic system—instead of just picking spells, you mix elemental runes to create them on the fly. First time I played, I accidentally made a useless puff of smoke instead of a fireball, but figuring out combos like ice + wind for a blizzard attack is half the fun.
The world’s got that classic JRPG feel—towns with suspiciously chatty NPCs, dungeons that actually make you think before rushing in, and a story that’s way more involved than most N64 action games. Combat’s real-time but with a slight delay when casting, so you can’t just button-mash. Took me a few fights to stop getting wrecked by basic skeletons, but once you get the rhythm, pulling off a perfectly timed lightning strike feels awesome.
It’s not perfect—the camera’s janky in tight spaces, and the graphics haven’t aged like Ocarina of Time—but if you’re into experimental 90s fantasy games, this one’s a hidden gem. Just save often; some of those late-game spell combos are brutal to unlock.
