About Hollywood Squares
Hollywood Squares for the NES came out in 1989, developed by Rare and published by GameTek. It was one of many game show adaptations on the system, a straightforward translation of the TV program where you compete in a tic-tac-toe grid of celebrities.
You control a contestant, selecting squares on the board to hear a celebrity's answer to a host's question. Your main objective is to get three squares in a row by correctly judging if the celebrity is telling the truth or bluffing. The core mechanics involve choosing a square, listening to the answer, and then agreeing or disagreeing with it; winning a square lets you place your mark, while losing a square gives your opponent the chance. The pacing is methodical, dictated by the question-and-answer format, and the difficulty comes from trying to outthink both the celebrities and your human or computer opponent. It feels like a quiet test of your own knowledge and intuition against a familiar TV structure.
