I picked up Hit The Ice on the Game Boy back in 1992, a Taito release that fit right in with the portable sports games of the era. It was a time when you could carry a full hockey match in your pocket, and this one offered a straightforward take on the sport without much fuss.

You control a team of three players, skating up and down the screen to pass the puck and shoot on goal. The main objective is simply to outscore your opponent before the timer runs out. A couple of mechanics stand out: you can body check opponents to steal the puck, and a special slap shot, charged by holding the button, lets you fire a much faster shot. The game moves at a quick pace, and the computer opponents can be surprisingly aggressive, making it a decent challenge. It feels like a fast, physical scramble on a tiny rink.
