About Hissatsu Doujou Yaburi (japan)
Hissatsu Doujou Yaburi came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, a Japan exclusive from SNK. It was part of that wave of late 80s NES games that experimented with mixing genres, sitting somewhere between an action game and a light role playing adventure.
You control a lone martial artist on a quest to defeat rival dojos. Your main goal is to travel across a map of Japan, challenging and defeating the masters of these schools. The gameplay shifts between an overhead exploration view, where you navigate towns and the countryside, and side scrolling combat stages. In these stages, you face off against dojo students and the master, using a limited set of punches, kicks, and special techniques. You need to manage your health and special move meter carefully, as the difficulty is quite punishing; losing a fight sends you back to the map. Progress feels deliberate, built on learning enemy patterns and conserving your power for the right moment. It feels like a methodical test of your patience and timing.
