Hexen on N64 is one of those dark fantasy shooters that feels like Doom’s goth cousin—if Doom traded its guns for spells and medieval weapons. You pick between three classes (warrior, cleric, or mage), and they actually play totally different. The warrior smashes things up close, the cleric’s got this weird mix of healing and poison magic, and the mage? Pure chaos with fireballs and lightning.
The levels are these sprawling, maze-like dungeons full of switches to hit, traps to dodge, and secrets tucked behind suspicious-looking walls. Some puzzles make you stop and think, but mostly it’s about fighting through hordes of monsters while trying not to get lost. The atmosphere’s thick with eerie music and flickering torches—kinda janky by today’s standards, but it’s got charm.
If you’re into retro FPS games with a fantasy twist, Hexen’s worth digging up. Just don’t expect the cleric to be as straightforward as they sound.
