Hexen on N64 is one of those dark fantasy shooters that feels like Doom but with way more atmosphere—think gothic castles, creepy dungeons, and a soundtrack that keeps you on edge. You pick from three classes (fighter, cleric, or mage), and each one plays totally different—fighter swings a big axe, mage slings fireballs, and cleric’s this weird mix of holy magic and brute force. I went cleric first time and regretted it immediately when I ran into a room full of floating skulls.
The levels are these sprawling, puzzle-heavy mazes where you’re constantly flipping switches, hunting keys, and backtracking when you realize you missed something. Combat’s clunky by today’s standards, but there’s something satisfying about corner-strafing a giant goat demon with a flail. Just don’t expect a walk in the park—some of the enemy placements feel downright mean.
It’s janky, moody, and occasionally frustrating, but if you’re into ‘90s FPS weirdness, Hexen’s got a vibe nothing else really matches.
