About Heiankyou Alien (japan)
Heiankyou Alien came out for the Game Boy in 1990, developed by Nintendo's own R&D1 team. It was part of that early wave of portable games, the kind you'd play in short bursts, often on a dim, non-backlit screen. This wasn't a sprawling adventure; it was a compact, focused puzzle-action hybrid that fit the handheld's limitations perfectly.
You control a small character tasked with protecting the ancient capital of Heian-kyo from invading aliens. Your main tool is digging holes. You dig a hole, an alien walks into it, and you then fill the hole to trap them. The screen is a single, self-contained playfield, and you must clear it of all aliens to advance. The pacing is methodical, almost tense, because if you linger too long, the aliens can multiply and overwhelm you. It feels like a strategic cat-and-mouse game where you are both the hunter and the potential prey.
